Sat 3rd May will remain a memorable day for me. Having left my job as Parish Secretary at the end of November 2007, this was a Mass of Thanksgiving for my work. The delay in celebrating this milestone was down to several reasons, none of which is important here.
It was difficult to agree to such an occasion, but I was persuaded by a comment from a parishioner that I should give them the opportunity to thank me for my work. At my request, the Mass was at 10am on a Saturday morning. The music reflected my connections with the Folk Group back in the 80’s but surprisingly enjoyed by many who kindly attended the Mass.
Following a presentation of a large, heavy parcel from Father Kieron (which turned out to be a lap top computer!) and a beautiful bouquet of flowers, presented by my grand-daughter Anna, I then had the unenviable task of saying thank-you.
I had prepared a ‘few words’ as an inpromptu speech can lead to complications. I was truly overwhelmed by so many people turning out on a busy Saturday morning and the kind words from Father Kieron and those I chatted to after the Mass. Refreshments were provided afterwards - I had asked for ‘coffee and cakes’ - but of course the Social Committee took it much further than that, and provided a magnificent spread and a beautifully inscribed cake.
Thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a wonderful occasion for my family and me. I haven’t left the parish and still regard it very much as my community family so will still be around to interfere! There will be a Mass of thanksgiving as a token of my appreciation
