Having experienced a weekend away together in December, twenty five teenagers decided to continue towards being confirmed in May at Arundel Cathedral.
Holy Spirit and Names
We gathered together in January for a session on the Holy Spirit and looked at Confirmation Names. The teenagers looked at the story of the Holy Spirit, Creation in Genesis – Valley of the Dry Bones in Ezekiel – The Annunciation in Luke – Pentecost in Acts. These biblical stories showed them how the Holy Spirit has been around since the beginning and shaped the lives of many.
We then looked at the power of a ‘Name’. That names and what they mean have a purpose. Just in advertising the use of names can be meaningful or have no purpose. This session was to help them start to realise that the Confirmation name they choose should be part of their faith journey and not a name they ‘really like’.
The teens gathered together for socialising and invited the teenagers that completed their confirmation in 2011-12 to join them. They watched Toy Story 3 and by the end of the movie most were trying to hold back the tears (and that was mostly the boys). A great night enjoyed by all.
Life in the Church
The leaders invited the teenagers to discover more about parish life. Each of the leaders gave their own personal testimony where they shared their journey of being involved in parish life, whether it was starting out as an Altar server, helping with teas/coffees, greeting people at the door or learning more about being a Catholic at University. We encouraged them to see they were part of the body of Christ in service not only at Sunday Mass but in their everyday lives.
Flame: National Youth Congress
On Saturday 24th March the parish sent a group to Flame. This was a national gathering for all Catholic young people in England and Wales. The event attracted over 8,000 people at Wembley Arena in London. The day included speakers which mixed faith and sport and a spontaneous dance performance which was the highlight for many!! Many thanks go to Mike Beal for driving the bus!!
2nd Away Day and Family BBQ – St Peter’s Witterings
This sadly was the last day for which we would be together for teaching. It was held in the lovely surroundings of St Peters in the Witterings. In the morning we looked at the different gifts of the Holy Spirit. This session allowed the teenagers to explore different moral situations in which they had to see where the gifts could be implemented. Over lunch we walked down to the beach to enjoy the seaside. In the afternoon we practiced the Confirmation Mass and then reflected over the programme as a whole thinking about the actual meaning of being confirmed, living as a Priest, Prophet and King. Priest means to always link into God in his holiness, Prophet means to speak the word of God even when no one else is listening and to be a King means to live in the Kingdom of God following the values set by Jesus in Luke 4: 18 - 19
‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’
Afterwards they were given a letter from Jesus, asking them to write back to him. This gave them some time to reflect upon the Confirmation programme this year and in faith look towards becoming a Confirmed young catholic.
We even invited all of their families to a BBQ dinner which was enjoyed by all.
On Sunday 13th May Emily was confirmed with Worthing deanery
On Sunday 20th May the Cathedral deanery Mass took place
Due to a car crash on the A27, Toby and Pearl were not able to make their Confirmation Mass and their Confirmation took place at St Richard’s Chichester.
Toby on the 27th May.
Pearl on the 3rd June.
Congratulations to all the teenagers who completed the Faith Exploration and Confirmation programme for 2012. It was an amazing experience accompanying you on your journey and allowing you space to grow in faith.
Many thanks go to Canon Kieron, Fr Paul, Fr Ron and Fr Tony for their support, the leaders and helpers for giving their time to lead the teenagers, and the parents and parishioners who have supported the programme throughout the year.
This year’s programme has now already started. Please pray for all those involved and participating.
